Eugene Hairston
The First Black Deaf Professional Boxer
It is with regret that announces the death of Mr. Eugene 'Silent' Hairston. He passed away peacefully at the Coler Goldwater Nursing Home on Monday, November 24, 2014.
Mr. Hairston was a 1947 Golden Glove Champion, Successful Professional Boxer and was a second round contender to fight Sugar Ray Robinson.
He fought the best Welter and Middleweight fighters of the late 1940s and 1950's Kid Gavilian, Jake Lamotta, Paddy Young, Paul Pender, etc.
Eugene has been honored throughout the country and feature books and magazines, Deaf African Americans, American Athletic Assn. of the Deaf Hall of Fame, Veteran Boxers Assn. Ring 8, etc.
